Five of Cups core meaning
Grief, regret and what's still left.
Upright meaning
Upright, the Five of Cups describes loss, regret or sadness about something that didn't go to plan. It's valid to feel it. But the card's message is that not everything is gone: there's still something standing behind you. Feel it, then turn around and look at what's left.
Reversed: a Life Oracle reflection
Life Oracle draws cards upright, so it doesn't give reversals a separate meaning. If you read with reversals, our interpretation is that a reversed Five of Cups invites reflection on its core themes — grief, regret and what's still left — and whether you are ready to turn towards what still remains.
Love & relationships
Healing after heartbreak.
In love, the Five of Cups often points to healing after heartbreak, disappointment or a breakup. Give yourself time. The care you still have — from friends, family and yourself — is part of what helps you move forward.
Career & money
A setback isn't the end.
At work, it can describe a setback: a rejection, a project that didn't land, a lost opportunity. It's a setback, not the end. With money, focus on what you still have and rebuild from there.
Five of Cups: yes or no?
Life Oracle's Yes/No reading: No
The Five of Cups is a no for now. Give yourself time to heal before trying again.
This is Life Oracle's interpretation, based on the card's tone in our deck (the same score our readings use), not a universal tarot rule.
Advice & message
“Focus on what remains.”
Symbolism in the artwork
In the Life Oracle artwork, a cloaked figure kneels with bowed head beside three spilled cups pouring glowing water onto the ground, while two cups still stand upright behind them. A bridge leads across a river to a castle. The two standing cups and the bridge reflect what remains and the way forward.
When Five of Cups appears in a reading
When the Five of Cups appears, it acknowledges something painful. Next to The Star, healing is on its way; next to the Six of Swords, it suggests moving on towards calmer waters.
