Major Arcana · XIV

Temperance Tarot Card Meaning

“Find your balance.”

Temperance is card XIV of the Major Arcana. It's about balance, moderation and patience — blending different things together until they work.

Number: XIV
Arcana: Major
Life Oracle Yes/No: Yes

Temperance core meaning

Moderation, patience and blending opposites.

Upright meaning

Upright, Temperance suggests finding the middle ground. It favours patience, healthy habits, compromise and steady progress over extremes. It often appears when slow, consistent effort is the best way forward.

Reversed: a Life Oracle reflection

Life Oracle draws cards upright, so it doesn't give reversals a separate meaning. If you read with reversals, our interpretation is that a reversed Temperance invites reflection on its core themes — moderation, patience and blending opposites — and where your life may feel out of balance.

Love & relationships

Steady, balanced love grows best.

In love, Temperance favours steady, balanced connection. It suggests compromise, patience and meeting in the middle. Relationships grow best when neither person has to give everything.

Career & money

Slow and steady wins this one.

For career and money, slow and steady wins. Temperance favours balanced workloads, sensible budgets and long-term plans over risky shortcuts.

Temperance: yes or no?

Life Oracle's Yes/No reading: Yes

Temperance leans yes — with patience. Things work out through steady, balanced effort.

This is Life Oracle's interpretation, based on the card's tone in our deck (the same score our readings use), not a universal tarot rule.

Advice & message

“Middle ground is not boring — it's powerful.”

Find the middle ground. Balance isn't boring; it's what makes progress last.

Symbolism in the artwork

In the Life Oracle artwork, a winged figure in a pale gown stands with one foot in a pool, pouring glowing water between two golden cups. Irises grow beside her and a golden path winds toward a crown of light on the horizon. The steady flow between two cups reflects the card's theme of blending opposites into balance.

When Temperance appears in a reading

When Temperance appears, the reading asks for patience and moderation. With The Star, it suggests healing over time; with The Lovers, harmony and compromise between two people.
